Position: Director of Software Engineering
Reports to: VP of Engineering/CTO
Location: Remote (Headquarters in Boston and San Francisco)

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Director of Software Engineering to lead and mentor our growing engineering organization. This role will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, and delivery of our enterprise SaaS and B2B software solutions. The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical background, proven leadership skills in managing large teams (20+ engineers), experience with modern software development practices, and familiarity with AI/ML concepts and their application in enterprise software. Experience in Life Sciences or similar regulated industries is a significant plus. The team is still growing, so there is an expectation for this person to get in the weeds and code while the team is being built.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic technical leadership and direction to multiple engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), from requirements gathering and design to development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 20+ software engineers, including team leads, ensuring high performance, professional growth, and effective collaboration.
- Drive the adoption of best practices in software engineering, including Agile methodologies, DevOps principles, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborate with product management, product marketing, and other stakeholders to define product roadmaps, prioritize features, and ensure alignment with business objectives.
- Lead the architecture and design of scalable, reliable, and secure enterprise-grade software systems.
- Champion code quality, performance optimization, and security best practices.
- Manage project budgets, timelines, and resources effectively.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, particularly in AI/ML, and evaluate their potential application to our products.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams on AI/ML implementation within our products.
- Contribute to the development and execution of the company's technology strategy.
- Manage vendor relationships and evaluate third-party software solutions.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering processes and efficiency.
- Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure team performance and project success.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing teams (20+ engineers).
- Proven experience leading the development and delivery of enterprise SaaS and/or B2B software solutions.
- Strong understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices.
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages and technologies (e.g., Java, Python, C++, cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Experience with Agile development methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban).
- Familiarity with DevOps principles and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with database technologies (e.g., SQL, NoSQL).
- Demonstrable experience with AI/ML concepts and their practical application in software development.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with specific AI/ML frameworks and libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
- Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with microservices architecture.
- Experience in a startup or high-growth company environment.
- Experience working in Life Sciences or other regulated industries (e.g., Healthcare, Finance, Aerospace).
